about an hour long thrash through the local hillside so I could have some direct comparison of the old engine to the new.

originally I went out at night then declared that was the car’s last run, and tucked it in to be torn apart the next day.

Kinja'd!!!

but, the next day I awoke, and wanted to go for another drive. So I didnt tear into the engine yet, and instead stripped off all the tired looking rubber trim

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

the middle of the door trim was optional on the VX model civic, so is just double sided taped on, no clips like on the other models of the same year.
all that gubbins around the wheels arches is non-honda, added by some previous owner who wanted their beloved little car protected.

Still to go is the wrap around pinstripe

Kinja'd!!!

and this burnt and faded Civic VX logo. I’ve been able to get MOST of it off, but it’s truly damaged the paint beneath.

Kinja'd!!!

Then it was off for another quick driuve, gathered up with a friend in their S3 and 05 STi swapped Impreza RS and did the same lap of the hills again

Kinja'd!!!

the RSTi was off for it’s first drive after finally sorting out the swap, and took off like a scalded cat. so he missed the turn and the S3 and I waited around looking at the views

Kinja'd!!!

and interacting with the local wildlife

It’s an excellent car. It needs to get lower as it leans too much in the turns, but not bad actually. And although the current engine is low on power, it’s actually the transmission that lets it down. Geared for ultimate mileage while commuting the length of each gear is just badly mismatched for energetic driving.

then, it was time to cease procrastinating and get it up in the air. (not recalled jackstands, do not feat)

Kinja'd!!!

a little before and after of the first day’s efforts

Kinja'd!!!

hood off
bumper off, under tray plastics off
all fluids/oils drained, radiator out
exhaust disconnected
one side of the wiring harness off
air intake box out

prepped it for addition of a/c by removing this big plastic block off plate

Kinja'd!!!

then, as is typical, the next two days were lost to having to go to work :D

but at least I have a nice car for office drives now

Small world, I used to have a ‘93 Si. I am sure anything would be better than the VX 1.5 and its super overdrive transmission. Given that almost all the type R parts bolt on, it can be converted to a real track beast, better than the R if short wheelbase is your thing.

PS, is that the TSX you got in Chicago? I assume that has worked out well?

it is indeed. working out fantastically.

and I’ve been pleased to see that theres essentially still zero manual versions available for sale, and the automatic ones with more miles and worse condition are going for more than I paid.

What are you doing with it? You parting it out or fixing it?

mine will essentially be an Si version when I’m done, as I’m swapping in a d16z6. No sunroof, which I prefer; and mine now has electric doors which the Si oddly didnt.
